Country of origin: India, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Russia.

About Garnet: Available in almost every colour, garnets originally came from India, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic (at the time was known as Bohemia) and Russia. Today, they are mined in Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, the Czech Republic and India. Red garnet is one of the most commonly found gems, found in metamorphic rocks (rocks altered by heat and pressure). 

There are over 15 garnet species, six of these varieties are most commonly used as gems. The best known are the almandine and pyrope which tend to be rich red, although sometimes almandines have a purple hue. 

What is the meaning of Garnet?  The garnet has meanings of strength and love. 

What is the history of Garnet?  The name garnet comes from the Latin word granatum, meaning grain or seed, thought to be a reference to a red pomegranate seed - similar in size and colour to some red garnet crystals. 

The use of garnets dates all the way back to the Bronze Age, they were often used in cloisonné technique which is an ancient decorative metalwork technique.
